Those who have their hands on the Final Fantasy XIII demo, which came bundled with the special edition Advent Children Complete, have been reporting an interesting aspect of the game. It runs in 1080p! Most current generation games run in 720p, and if you have a PS3 hooked up to a 1080p TV, then in the settings you can check off all the resolutions so that the PS3 auto detects what the game wants to be output as. If all the check boxes are selected, then a game like Uncharted will run at its native resolution of 720p, while a game like Super Stardust HD will run at 1080p.

Now that most of the technical jargon has been explained, here is what is interesting about the FF XIII demo. The PS3 chooses to run the demo at 1080p, which means that the supported resolutions for FF XIII are 480p/720p/1080i/1080p. Having said this, just because the game supports a 1080p resolution, does not mean that it is running at a native 1080p, but rather an upscaled 720p. Metal Gear Solid 4 is an example of this (though the game actually ran at 1024x768 and then upscaled). However, there are some aspects of the demo which appear to be running at a native 1080p, not an upscaled 720p.

Take these screenshots for example:
1080p Screenshot
Upscaled Screenshot

The first screenshot is a captured screenshot from the opening cut scene of the demo, and the second is the same screenshot, downscaled to 720p, then upscaled back to 1080p (using a powerful upscaling algorithm). There is noticable detail lost in the upscaled version, which suggests that the original was not upscaled, and is actually running at a native 1080p. The rest of the game appears to run at 720p, which includes the shorter in game cutscenes, and gameplay.

So we are going to be able to play a game with beautiful cut scenes, but at what cost? Well with higher resolutions, higher video bit rates are needed, and based on that screen shot there is very little compression. Therefore, the amount of storage required for all the cut scenes in the game could add up very quickly. For example, most Final Fantasy games have close to 1 hour of cgi videos, so assuming a similar trend for Final Fantasy XIII, even at a lower video bit rate of 20 Mb/s, the storage required is around 9GB. The CGI cutscenes alone will take up almost 1/5 of a dual layer blu ray disc, or a full DVD. This amount is not even counting all the other videos that will not be cgi, but rather, the game's engine quality graphics with extra filters and such. So while this might not affect the game's end result on the PS3, it does add to the question “How many discs will the 360 version be on?” which Square Enix has so far refused to answer.

What does this all mean? Well simply put, we are going to be getting some amazing eye candy when playing Final Fantasy XIII.

Hey, hey annonymous! Shut up! Even you said you don't know much about this stuff. Do you have a PS3? If your T.V. has an alert to tell you a change in res, you would notice that when you start a game that is not compatible at 1080p it will alert you that res has changed to either 1080i or 720p depending on the game. Why are trying to state facts that are untrue. Last time I checked a large majority of games do not run to 1080p. You CANNOT force them too. You can upscale DVD's if that's what your referring to. So just shut up and either buy a PS3 or do a bit more research on resolutions. You must be like 10 years old. Listen to finalfantasykid and the guy who actually knows how to spell anonymous.

Hey Annonymous, learn to spell Anonymous before making any rash comments.

If you read the article, you would actually know that it does run in 720, but in the cg cutscenes, it runs in 1080

If you read the article you would have seen that I clearly stated that while the gameplay seems to run in 720(and upscaled to 1080p), the cutscenes are in NATIVE 1080p. And I posted a couple of screenshots to prove it.

It RUNS in 1080p because you can force any PS3 game to do that. It is not 1080p native, they already said that. This article is BS, do some real research, like actual facts from the creators themselves, perhaps?

To the Anon that mentioned SE's single layer/dual layer quandary, perhaps the project is now bigger than originally planned? I mean, if the demo alone was close to 5GB and the game itself maxes out at 30GB, we're looking at a ten hour game (when you figure that the entire game won't have as high a CG-gameplay ratio as the demo) - TOPS. If they put in a ton of CG, we're probably looking at even less. Now, when was the last time SE gave us a ten hour Final Fantasy? I'm thinking never (unless this was possible back in the Nintendo days - I confess, I've not finished anything prior to FFVI, though I've started IV).

Even when you strip the Final Fantasy games back to their barest bones, no sidequests, no minigames, no grinding, no special bosses and hidden dungeons, you'd still be hard pressed to clock in at under 15 for any of the games I've played (as I remember, anyway...). If I remember right, I think there's a gamefaqs "challenge" FAQ for beating FFIX in under 12 hours. Or maybe it was XII....

Anyway, a 30GB game would be sadly short, and I don't see SE doing that with their flagship series.

I agree with the first anon, I could care less what MS does. cuz the ps3 version definitely gonna be prettier!

Didn't SE say that they were unsure of going single layer or dual layer blu-ray? If thats the case then it'll probably be 30gb tops and the 360 version is probably looking at 3-4 disks.

Good god in heaven, I agree with Houkai - YES. I couldn't care less how much room it takes up, because I'm getting the BluRay version anyway. I cannot even express my excitement at the moment. SO COOL!

Anyway, in light of the space requirements, they'll probably end up scaling back to 720p for the 360 version and/or compressing things a bit more. I don't know much about that kind of thing, but I imagine some space saving tactics will have to come into play. Because even if MS would allow it (apparently they put a cap on this sort of thing?), I don't know if anyone would want to buy a 6+ DVD game. Not to mention how expensive that set would probably be...

BUT HEY. Bluray, so no skin off my nose. I can't wait to see Lightning in full HD awesomeness.

YES.

Yep, it does run in 1080. Watching Lightning kick ass in full HD is great.
