I'm not much for speculation but can't help to notice that out of all the characters we know of, details about Vanille have been hush hush. Not a lot has been said about her. She's pretty much the mysterious character right now.
I somehow get the feeling that it's going to remain hush hush too until the game is just about to come out, or they just won't say a word about it cause it's that big of a spoiler. Kinda strange that they haven't said much about her yet the game comes out next month in Japan. Maybe we'll find out more in the coming weeks? Part of me thinks the reason her summon has not been revealed yet is because there really is no reason. It's just the order that they chose to reveal all the news that they want to reveal up until the game is released. She just so happens to be last in line. If not, then her summon may be a spoiler in some way? Many people think that her summon has to do with her heavy burden/dark resolve. So it's possible it's going to be a dark summon. However, we don't know exactly what this burden is and how she's handling it inside. And since Feng has finally been introduced with Oerba in her name, they're obviously connected. And Feng has something funky going on with her marking. Looks frozen. Maybe to stop it or to slow it down? I dunno. She works for the Sanctum so maybe they have something to do with it. I came across something interesting today so take this with a grain a salt. I read a post on Neo Gaf that this poster knows some guy who has worked on the localization. He said that Feng and Vanille are from a 100 years ago. He doesn't know what this quite meant though. Time machine, 100 years old... Maybe it's just referring to something that their tribe or whatever has been trying to do for ages? Like I said, take it with a grain of salt but.... Let's pretend this is true. What things pop into mind? Their clothes for one. Maybe from a tribe long ago or that's just what they wore back in the day. You don't see anyone else wearing what they have on. Their weapons...When I think about it, look like old technology compared to everyone elses. After listening to Vanille's narration again with that in mind, I thought of some things. "The thirteen days after we awoke, were the beginning of the end." This could mean when her and Feng woke up into the future... Unless something was already said about this quote... then blah! Then you got that quote from the TGS Trailer... "When I couldn't see a future and I was afraid. When the future was clear and it hurt to see. I just close my eyes and lose myself in happier days." Curious to hear what you all think about this. If she came from the future (and not the past), then she knows what happens and since she'd be pretty much changing history, she could disappear thus the reason why it's not so clear. Her future is fading. Her and Feng are setting things right. So maybe... Feng is working for the Sanctum, but for a good cause and Vanille is in on it too? Of course this could easily have to do with her curse and in her perspective, a future looks impossible to have. Assuming that it is true about what that one guy said on Neo Gaf, then that's pretty big if you ask me. But again, take it with a grain of salt. I'm just thinking outside the box here with some of the stuff I come across. What do you all think? Different take? Share away!

The 100 years ago.. I am thinking that it might have something to do with the War of Revealations that was mentioned in the novel.. theres a possibility that their tribes were involved in that war but as to how I have no idea.

To be honest I've thought that the line "The thirteen days after we awoke, were the beginning of the end." to refer to the entire cast and not (as this theory would sugguest) Fang and Vanille. (Granted that at that point we knew nothing of Fang)
That line to me meant that the Thirteen days after they found and were chosen by the Pulse F'alcie was the being of the end. The end being the end of the world, their lives etc. I agree with the connection with Fang and Vanille being tribal or something like that. As I've posted before, that was the only relation I think that the have, being that they share no distinct features. ( e.g. Yuna and Riku, Lenna and Farris, Lightning and Serah). Though the share an accent, and finally as stated before the Oerba title. Have not read the novel entirely so can not comment on the war of revelations.

It would be interesting to find out more about Vanilles past to see if this theory is true or not.

Interesting theory. I don't know how I feel about time travel in this Final Fantasy, though. It seems cliche.

Hmmm... I don't know how I feel about that. It seems kind of, off in FFXIII's universe. I'd much rather have them wear what they do because they're from Pulse, than have some sort of Time Traveling punch in this game.

I don't like the time traveling thing so much as well. I'm thinking along the lines of their tribe has some sort of history with something that's been going on for years and it's their time to fulfill their duties.
In that picture with Feng and Vanille where they still have to have that talk about whatever it is. Seems like Feng is in charge of something and Vanille looks hesitant. Maybe it has to do with an assignment she's been given and not profiling it? It could very well be that Vanille is being used for something. Considering that Feng works for the Sanctum, maybe she's giving Vanille secret orders, leading the gang into a trap. And it's not like she wants to do this. But it's hard to know exactly what's she's thinking on the inside. Why are Feng and Vanille doing this? Maybe to protect something? Maybe they're being threaten? Bitch control? Feng tells Snow in one scene that he should be worried about himself. Possibly meaning that she's in a do or die situation and doesn't care about anyone else, so she's just giving him some simple advice? But yeah.. If they want to do something with time travel, just make a sequel to Chrono Trigger.

FF8 involved time travel at one point and it fit very well.
Plus it isn't like Fang or Vanille are from the future. I think through a sleep stasis process to survive the centuries is understandable and not too far fetched for them to last long enough to exist in the present time. it's also possible they might be more than just L'Cie. Hmm now that I think about it, was it possible taht something happened during the War of revealations that placed the L'cies that were involved in sleep stasis..
But then again, Fang is somewhat in the same situation as Serah ( in a way) cause she seems like a person who has knowledge of Pulse but yet has teh Coccon's mark on her

It's just that if Fang and Vanille were already Pulse l'Cie and they fell into that sleep status, why would they both awake THEN if Lightning and co. are all Pulse l'Cie? And yah, there was time travel in FF8, and it did kind of fit with Ultimecia and all, but I dunno, time travel just doesn't seem to fit in XIII's universe (imo anyways).... hmmm, guess we'll just have to wait and see, and god it'll be hard staying away from the Internet after the 17th of December lol XD

This part sounds interesting in episode Zero part 4
"Normal humans cannot live on Pulse. Frequent natural disasters and violent monsters running rampant make it impossible. She had heard that the only ones living there were practically barbarians." Maybe many years ago, those living on Pulse were not barbaric. Then something cataclysmic happened but before it happened, they chose several people to put in sleep stasis. Maybe they were chosen for something and are the only hope? Then after the cataclysmic event happened, the survivors just started to get worse throughout the years and downgraded to barbaric status. Vanille and Fang are from Pulse right? Or maybe what Serah heard is not true and those living on Pulse are hiding in secret?
