Lets hope that after its long developement period it lives up to Nomura's claim.
I hate the way he keeps on teasing us with future news of something 'very suprising' and stuff like that.
Why can't they ever say something concrete?!
According to an interview with Tetsuya Nomura in the most recent issue of Famitsu Magazine, the battle system for Agito XIII has gone through many overhauls, and in fact the screen shots and video that has been shown so far is much different than what it is now.
He also mentions that there won't be much Versus XIII news for a while, however once they are at a certain point in the development, he will show everyone something "surprising".

That's exactly what I was saying in another thread about FFXIII to show a new trailer at e3. They say one thing, hyping us up, then they go ahead and change their mouth. I mean, it's not personally their fault. It could be due to external or internal environmental issues in the company but either way it's annoying.

I stole some translated info summery about this interview from finalfantasy-xiii.net, sound quite interesting:
Day and night cycle? sounds like it might be some Gothic-like style inside versusNomura is no longer involved in the development of Final Fantasy XIII. All the character design is finished so he's moved onto working with his own projects.
He's currently concentrating on Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII.
The battle system for Agito has evolved since we last saw it.
Even though Agito is on the PSP, they're aiming to make it the pinnacle" of this handheld generation.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII is being developed by many members from the Final Fantasy VII team who are working well together.
The team isn't making any compromises so the quality of the finished product should be great.
They're currently testing the battle system and map gimmicks in Versus.
Versus will have a day and night cycle.
Nomura wants to show the result of leaving a character on their own for a long period of time.
He asks us to be patient for Versus information. Once he gets to a certain point he'll have a surprise for us. (Versus won't be shown at E3 almost 100% confirmed).
Final Fantasy XIII will have new screenshots and a trailer revealed at E3.![]()
First Kitase makes a statement that FFXIII might be the greatest Final Fantasy game to date, then Nomura claims something revolutionary about FFXIII and then some about Versus XIII, and now this claim that Agito XIII will be the pinnacle of portable gaming.
Wow. Developers lately really want to ramp up the hype lately, huh?
I hope, for their own sake as developers, that they can live up to those bold promises.

The way they are doing this is like building the Giza Pyramids. Build it up layer by layer, take a break and then build it up again. Tends to be a bit annoying of course but what's good quality without a little precision in hardwork??
Back to the topic, I am curious as what they meant by map gimmicks for Versus.. will they be using the overworld view in VIII or something similar?

A person can choose neither the world nor the age into which they are born. However, they can choose how they live. This is not a story of a single chapter. It is a history written by ones' own hand, and by fate.

After reading Dengeki's I feel slightly better about there being no Versus... I guess they have nothing to show..? Maybe they're working on certain aspects that aren't trailer related.
I get the feeling that Kitase and Nomura are kind of competing over XIII and Versus. xD But a bit of competition is always a good thing, especially when you've got massive amounts of talent behind each game. =3
Yeah, Nomura's said that Versus is going to have an overworld. Map gimmicks sound to me like a return to the PSOne FFs, with little secrets in all levels of maps (caves on the overworld, drawers in houses) that can get you special items and such. ^_^
I believe VIII had something similar , where there are hidden drawpoints all over the map as well as areas that can only be accessed through Ragnarok.. how Versus is gonna pull this off is anyone's guess
