Agito to show the true harshness of war?

Square Enix's Hajime Tabata is likely to be busy over the next few months as The 3rd Birthday approaches its Winter release.

But, simultaneous with the Parasite Eve followup, Tabata is also directing another major PSP title, Final Fantasy Agito XIII. While development on this is trailing The 3rd Birthday, Tabata wasn't too shy to answer a few questions in a recent interview conducted in Dengeki PlayStation.

Asked for a status update on the game's production, Tabata said "The 3rd Birthday takes priority, but development is still steadily progressing. I believe it will be an FF that differs from the image fans have."

Asked what this means, he responded, "We're making it into a game where you can feel the true pain and weight as a war story. Because it has some harsh portrayals, Kitase (producer Yoshinori Kitase) is freqently making checks.

Kitase chimed in here with some further explanation: "There are parts where you see a soldier burned and falling over after being struck by fire. Initially, I warned them to not go too far in their expressions, but now I'm telling them to do whatever they want."

Closing off this little tease, Tabata said: "It's a full spec Final Fantasy that's multiplayer and can be played on the PSP. Please anticipate it greatly."

I never really cared about this game before, but now I am starting to like what I am hearing. It would certainly be more unique if a FF game would finally take a more serious approach and show things in a more realistic manner. I know we have Versus coming up, but other than that most of the SE games do try to butter things up.

Can't wait to see the visual presentation of this... and yeah I agree Katya, since they are using physical maths in Versus as well then chances are their future titles might apply the same techs.. Should be good..

Sounds like the game is indeed different than what we have previously expected. TGS should prove to be pretty crazy.

Yup, Kitase said earlier that Agito and Versus will be more action oriented. I don't expect a real FF out of those 2 anymore.

Actually to have that much action for those two titles makes sense considering that both stories have strong involvement in the conflict between countries... the action isn't just there for show.

Well, I have full confidence Hajime Tabata will deliver on the script. He's a very clever writer, and an extraordinary game developer despite being in the shadow of his high profile friends for ages, now he's having the the peak of his career as a developer and I'm sure he won't let this opportunity go unmarked.

Many people credit him and the composer for the splendid work in Crisis Core but that game used locations, characters and music from earlier FFVII game. I'm interested in how he'll pull it off. I have confidence in Nomura when he says Agito will be the best PSP RPG ever. (no wonder, though, I can count the 3D PSP RPGs on one hand after some serious injuries and lost fingers =)
